Visit GS1 at Traçabilite/Progilog 2009 
From logistics tags via product data sheets to RFID, GS1 standards all contribute to improving product traceability from end to end of the life cycle. Food, health, anti-counterfeiting or anti-theft … Traçabilité/Progilog 2009 (25 and 26 November, Porte de Versailles, Pavillon 8) will provide a forum for exchanging views on all these topics, and in particular to highlight the economic advantages of implementing standards. Come and get the latest GS1 news at stand B18, where you will able to attend a series of presentations focussing on community product traceability and see the launch of an anti-counterfeiting web portal, called EstCeAuthentique.org.

A new service for members: the GS1 Observatory for Logistics Excellence!
Following the launch in February 2009 of the Observatory project, this collaborative platform dedicated to logistics excellence is now up and running! The web portal, designed by and for its supplier and retail users, makes it possible to quickly improve the use of GS1 standards, and consequently logistics efficiency between partners. In the GS1 Observatory, businesses have a state-of-the-art, simple, ergonomic, adaptable tool for reporting any discrepancies regarding goods reception (shipping advice and marking). Carrefour, Cora, Lecasud, Monoprix and Système U are already hooked up to the platform. Other retailers are to follow and eventually join the GS1 Observatory at various stages during 2010. A presentation is scheduled to be made at the traceability event on Wednesday 25 November.

RFID /EPC to boost in-store security 
Wal-Mart, Metro and C&A have been extensively involved in drafting the GS1 international guide on the implementation of the anti-theft function of RFID/EPC. What does this contribution from such leaders of food and clothes signal? Probably that there is a clear desire to reach international harmonisation of EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) solutions by exploiting the opportunities offered by RFID/EPC in the area of anti-theft. According to Patrick Ribout, the man managing the RFID project for the Oxylane group, “With RFID/EPC we have a unique technology that offers not only better product traceability… but also a smart tool for combating theft”. Fruit and vegetable traceability
An international guide on “Traceability for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables” has just been published, in the English language version. It describes best practices for traceability in the sector and offers recommendations for operators at each stage of the process on recording information, product identification and marking. here.

On 26 October the French State Secretary for the Digital Economy, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, gave the results of the announcement of opportunity for the Proxima Mobile project, the future mobile public services portal. Among the successful applicants was “Proxi-Produit”, a project supported by GS1, AFNIC and SBW, which will use the CodeOnLine service. Proxi-Produit gives users access to information (on nutrition, the environment, allergens, etc..) about consumer goods, via a mobile internet connection.

| GS1 to launch the year of e-invoicing at Démat’Expo ! |

Electronic invoicing projects are now really beginning to take shape in many businesses. But questions remain: what is the best invoice format? What is the legal framework? How do you choose the right provider? On 1 December GS1 will be organising a major event to answer these questions and more, during the Démat’Expo fair. The presentations will focus on first-hand feedback from retailers, suppliers and providers, giving both SMEs and large corporations the opportunity to exchange views on best practices. “Electronic Invoicing: guaranteeing optimised business relations. A review of the legal context, best solutions and feedback from business operators”, is the name of the event, on 1 December, 10am. to 4.30pm. Grande Arche de la Défense, Paris.

| GS1 elected onto Board of ACSEL |

ACSEL – the association for the digital economy chaired by Pierre Kosciusko-Morizet – has accepted Nathalie Dammery, GS1 director of strategic marketing, as Board member. ACSEL’s purpose is to study the impact of emerging technologies, in particular in terms of economic growth.

| GS1 to chair AFNOR’s work on barcode and RFID standards |

Xavier Barras, GS1 France Director for Innovation and Technologies, has been re-elected as chairman of CN31, one the committees of the French standards body, AFNOR. This committee’s terms of reference cover standards for technical traceability systems. More importantly, it is responsible for defining the French position on standardisation work in CEN and ISO.
