In 2004 Gencod became GS1 – Global Standard One. 108 national organisations adopted the same name, and the same ambition: “to enable user communities to develop and implement

international standards, by providing the tools and the necessary trust..”. Whether it be in mobile commerce, RFID, traceability or counterfeiting, GS1 standards emerge and are designed, both at international and local level, in a spirit of cooperation. In a few days’ time France will be the focus of GS1 governance as we will be hosting the Management Board, whose members come from major retailers and suppliers of consumer and health goods, and then in the following week the GS1 Standards Development Event, the forum of experts in automatic identification and e-commerce, to be held in Lille. Whilst GS1 has over 1 million member businesses in 145 countries around the world, implementation remains national. Each country, seeking to satisfy its market expectations, sets its own priorities in terms of standards implementation.

Marketing: steering committees to speed up adoption of standards

The Steering Committees where GS1 defines its action plan priorities have one very clear overriding goal: to speed up the adoption of standards whilst favouring existing practices.
To date, five committees have been set up:
- electronic catalogues/fast-moving consumer goods,
- electronic invoicing/SMEs,
- health/logistics strategy,
- construction/EDI
- product data sheets, logistics and transport/information flow.
With all members being operational users, the Committees develop their 3 year strategic plans in a spirit of cooperation: definition of the sector pre-requisites, common media, audits, training courses, business cases and dedicated communication strategy. Dashboards are used to make regular assessments of the actions completed. Reporting directly to the Management Committee, the steering committees ensure that working groups’ targets and deliverables are aligned.

Management Board et le Jag/ GSMP

This year France is to host two major events for the GS1 organisation. First there will be a Management Board meeting in Versailles (20 and 21 October), at which the leading decision makers of the GS1 Board will endorse GS1 key strategic choices. Then, just a few days later, on 26 and 30 October in Lille, over 300 working group members will convene to work on the task of developing and up-dating standards.

Upstream implementation of GS1 standards is a European challenge!

Contact

The European FMCG industry and its upstream suppliers (packaging and raw materials) have turned to GS1 to support them in implementing its standards. So as to make sure that all countries that are users of European businesses receive the same level of local assistance, GS1 is to coordinate all GS1 member organisations’ deployment activities. This means that every country will be giving its users the same kind of support and will apply the same approach in order to guarantee implementation interoperability. European coordination is provided by the GS1 Global Office, with the assistance in GS1 France of project leader Séverine Hervé. The main goal of this project in 2009-2010 is to support the introduction of GS1/GUSI standards in this sector in Europe so as to promote their acceptance and interoperability.

GS1 commits and contributes to the international development of UN standards

Contact

GS1 France and UN/CEFACT(United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) have been working in close cooperation now for a number of years.
The priorities for GS1 within this international structure include the publication of the new generation of EDI standards, in particular UN XML, for GS1 target sectors (Supply Chain, Transport and Logistics, eGovernment); in addition a significant milestone was achieved recently with the publication of the new UN XML specifications for the Cross Industry Invoice V2 –CII. This development process has been closely followed by the European Commission that has said it considers this publication the sole reference standard for the European market. Last but not least, GS1 will take the lead in the process needed to align the GS1 XML V 2.5 invoice with the CII V2 and subsequently roll it out using a global implementation guide aimed at ensuring interoperability between sectors and countries.

Tetrapak brings its 30 plants on five continents up to speed

Tetrapak, global leader in carton packaging for foodstuffs, has managed in just a few months to upgrade all its logistics labelling to GS1 standards. In the space of five months, 30 plants dotted around the globe and accounting for 99% of all Tetrapak production switched to GS1 standards with the introduction of a single tag on their palettes.
Today, all Tetrapak customers receive the information on the palette in the same format. For the customers it is seen as a huge competitive edge. But Tetrapak has gone further, since the target is now to put all palette information on RFID/EPC tags by 2012: a major challenge! A special tribute is deserved by GS1 Sweden for all their support to Tetrapak during this harmonisation process.

The international product data sheet goes international

The GS1 product data sheet is extensively used in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (millions are exchanged every day around the world) but is now for the first time being developed for the non-food sector, in particular in DIY. From home equipment to electronic goods, all the details of the product data sheet designed to ease the supply chain for these goods have now been defined, leaving just the technical characteristics to be developed.

The Book sector goes electronic

There are a number of features that make the “Book” sector different: sale of new releases, return of unsold copies or treatment of defective publications. In order to have standardised electronic exchange of these features which are vital for the system to function, market operators, supported by GS1 France, have developed 6 EDI “Book” messages. If you want to send an order, an order response, a shipping advice, a receipt advice, a goods return advice or instructions regarding goods return, you can now find all of these messages in EANCOM®2002 (D01B).

Bridge Project: the final report is out!

The final hearings in the Bridge Project were held in London by the European Commission on 8 and 9 October. The project, which lasted for three years and had a budget of 13 million Euros, has made it possible to develop several innovative hard- and software solutions using EPCglobal standards, for example an intelligent shelf design that includes RFID scanners and antennae. The Bridge project has also made a valuable contribution to the field of detector design, safety/security and Discovery services. A wide range of pilot operations provided the opportunity for consolidating the business cases of many applications, such as anti-counterfeiting, store applications, reusable media management, etc.
